FROM Kirby's inquest, which was taken in the 13th Edward I. it appears that Yarm was held by the heir of Marmaduke de Thweng, ficut liberum burgum. || The lands here, at an early period, feem to have fallen into the hands of different proprietors; for in the faid inquest we find that the heir of Stephen Kellet held two oxgangs of land here, for which he paid a fine of feven-pence farthing. Adam Stainfby likewise held lands here, for which he paid to the king's bailiff, a fine of four-pence farthing. ‡

By an inquifition poft mortem, taken in the 30th Edward III. on the death of John Lord D'arcy, we find that the manor of Yarm was held of the King in capite by military service, and valued at twenty marks. §

A SECOND inquifition was taken here, in the forty-second year of the fame King's reign, before John de Scotherfcelf, efcheator for the county of York, from which it appears that the manor and town of Yarm, with the appurtenances, mills, tolls, fairs, markets, perquifites of court, and all other profits pertaining to the said manor and town of Yarm, were then in the hands of tenants at will, and paid the fum of 167. per ann. at the terms of St. Peter and St. Martin, by juft and equal portions. †

HERE is a market weekly on Thursday, and four fairs annually; viz. on the Thursday before the 6th of April; on afcenfion day; on the 2d of Auguft; and on the 19th and 20th days of October, for fheep, cattle, horfes, and cheeses. The markets have greatly decreased within the last forty years, and particularly fince the erection of the bridge at Stockton, which opened an eafy communication with Cleveland. The inhabitants are, however, plentifully fupplied with provifions, and generally at reasonable prices. The fairs, which have been long established, are much frequented, particularly that held in the month of October, which occafions a great influx of money to the adjacent country, and may justly be confidered among the first in the north of England.

THERE are no manufactories carried on here, of any confequence; corn, butter, hams, bacon, and pork, fent coaftwife to London, conftitute the most confiderable branch of commerce. The exportation of
