PREFACE ON the instructions of the Statute Law Committee, a Statute Law Revision Bill dealing with the Acts of the Parliaments of Scotland from 1424 to the Union in 1707 was prepared by Mr Æ. J. G. Mackay, K.C., lately Sheriff of Fife and Kinross, Mr J. A. Fleming, K.C., Sheriff of Dumfries and Galloway, and Mr J. H. Millar, Advocate, and received the Royal Assent on 4th August 1906. The present volume contains a Chronological Table of all these Acts, the text of such of them as are of a public nature and still in force, and a digested Index of the latter. The collection of Acts which has been used for the preparation of the Statute Law Revision Act and this volume is the Record Edition, commonly known as Thomson's Acts; but as another collection in three duodecimo volumes, which contains most but not all of the Acts in the Record Edition, is more frequently used by practising lawyers, a reference to that collection is also given in the Chronological Table and in square brackets at the head of each Act. The spelling of the Record Edition has been preserved, but the contractions have been written out at length. In the few cases where there was any doubt as to the meaning of the contraction, reference has been made to the duodecimo edition, and to an edition of 1566, commonly termed the Black Acts. Repealed portions of an Act are omitted. The omission is shown by dots, and a reference is given at the end of the Act to the repealing enactment. Acts of a local or personal or private nature are omitted. This volume has been prepared by Mr Fleming and Mr Millar. March 1908. |
