great and essential truths of Christianity, and a considerable portion of Holy Writ for proof and illustration. The sixth number passes from simple proof and illustrations, to explanations grounded upon Scripture. The Catechism is still the text-book; but the field opens wider, and generally it will require that the scholars be able to read well, and to follow up an argument, before they can take up No. VI. with profit. A more full explanation of the design of this number is given in the notice which is prefixed to it separately.

No. VII. may be considered as ascending to the highest stage of catechetical instruction. The questions are illustrative of the Catechism, but they enter largely into some of the most important subjects of divinity. Man's original state, his fallen state, and his recovery in the Christian covenant, are the three principal heads into which this work is divided. The author has written a preface to his own work, which makes any further remarks here unnecessary. To the questions illustrating the Catechism, is added an Appendix, which contains, in the form of questions, a defence of Episcopacy and other matters of Church discipline, subjects which are highly important to be taught in schools connected with the Established Church, but which are very properly reserved until the great doctrines taught by the Church out of God's word are thoroughly instilled into the mind. A Glossary is added to the whole, which is not only adapted to explain the words used in the "Ques

tions," but also to supply materials for instruction in Grammar.

No. VIII. is Bishop Beveridge's work on the Church Catechism. The Postscript sufficiently explains and analyses this work. It is probable that but a few of the children in National or Parochial Schools will arrive at this number in the series; but if any approach near to it, it might be well to give the book itself as a reward to boys or girls leaving the School; that when they find themselves beyond the reach of the Teacher's voice, they may perfect themselves in the elements of the Christian faith, and continue to learn the certainty of those things in which they have been instructed.
