265. TREVELYAN, of Nettlecomb, Somersetshire.

HIS ancient family, takes its name from Trevelyan, in the parish of St. Vehep, near Fowey, in Cornwall; of which, and other lordships in that county, they were anciently poffefs'd, at, or foon after the conqueft.

In 2 Edw. I. Felicia, widow of William de Bodrugan, grants to Andrew, fon of Nicholas de Trevelyan (a), and his heirs, by Felicia, his wife, all her lands and fervices about Trevelyan, and Cume; to which deed, Sir Richard de Cerafis, Sir William de Bodrugan, Richard de Hywis, and feveral other gentlemen of principal note in that country, are witneffes. This Felicia, furvived her husband; and in 2 Edw. II. confirmed to Nicholas de Trevelyan, her fon, a grant, formerly made to him, of a house, and lands, in Polran. Which fame eftate, Thomas, fon of Nicholas de Trevelyan, grandson to Felicia, gave to Otto de Trevelyan, his younger brother.

This Thomas, made feveral purchases at Leftwithiel, and elfewhere, in the county of Cornwall, and 33 Edw. III. accounted with Edward Pauncel, for certain rents and profits he had received, belonging to the dutchy of Cornwall, iffuing out of the manor of Reftrant.

The next of this family, after Thomas, was, Baldwin de Trevelyan; which Baldwin, was lord of Trevelyan, from 42 Edw. III. to 8 Hen. IV. and was fucceeded by,

Henry, his fon and heir; which Henry, married Alice, daughter and heir to John Boteraux, of Urder, by Margaret, his wife, daughter and heir to Retorville, of Retorville, and left two fons; John Trevelyan, of Trevelyan, 5 Hen. VI. who died without iffue; and Thomas; which Thomas, by Lucia, his wife, was father of another John.

This John Trevelyan, married Elizabeth, daughter and heir to Thomas Whalefborough, of Whalefborough, near Stratton, in Cornwall, by Joane, his wife, fifter and heir to Simon Ralegh, of Nettlecomb; in whofe right, befides the lordships of Nettlecomb, in com. Som, and Whalefborough, in com. Cornw. feveral other eftates of great value, in thofe and other counties, accrued to the Trevelyan family. This John, was sheriff of Cornwall,
