Le peintre Gérard Lairesse a traité le même sujet et nous l'avons donné sous le no. 754; nous ne reviendrons donc pas sur ce que nous avons dit alors, relativement à cette scène de l'histoire ancienne. Mais nous ferons remarquer que si, par l'importance du sujet et par le nombre des figures, ce tableau est l'un des plus considérables de ceux qui soient sortie du pinceau de Vander Werf, il ne peut être considéré comme un de ses meilleurs ouvrages. L'expression de Séleucus semble faire pressentir une douleur physique qui ne peut s'accorder avec le dévouement héroïque d'un père, qui fait un sacrifice pour sauver les jours de son fils. La pose de Stratonice est sans grâce, la figure d'Érasistrate est tout-à-fait insignifiante et tellement déplacée qu'elle semble un hors-d'œuvre. Ce tableau, peint sur bois, était du nombre de ceux que possédait l'anglais Grégoire Page; depuis il passa dans la collection du roi de France, et se voit maintenant dans la galerie du Louvre. The painter Gerard Lairesse has treated the same subject, and we have given it under no. 754; we shall not therefore repeat what we then said relative to that scene from ancient history. But we must remark, that, if from the importance of the subject and the number of figures, this picture is one of the most distinguished due to Vander Werf's pencil, it cannot be considered as one of his best works. The expression of Seleucus seems to be that of bodily pain, and does not suit the heroical devotedness of a father making a sacrifice to save the life of a son. The attitude of Stratonice is void of grace, whilst the figure of Erasistrates is quite insignificant, and so misplaced, that it appears foreign to the subject. This picture, which is painted on wood, was amongst those belonging to sir Gregory Page Turner; it has been since, in the collection of the king of France, and now is in the Gallery of the Louvre.
