EXPLANATIONS AND CORRECTIONS.

EXPLANATIONS.

The ADVERTISEMENTS of Queen Elizabeth are sometimes referred to as of the year 1564, and, sometimes, of the year 1565. This is accountable by the old and new styles of computation. The Royal letters commanding the advertisements were issued, 25th of January, 1565. The year terminating on the 24th of March, according to the old style, the Advertisements are usually described as of 1564.

The CANONS are marked by a similar ambiguity; sometimes, as of 1603, and, sometimes, of 1604. Convocation met, 20th of March, 1604, or, according to the old style, 1603.

The STOLE, as distinct from the Tippet, and as forbidden by the Reformers, appears (see Glossary) further from a Puritan remonstrance in 1573. (Quoted by the Church Review, 30th June, 1866, in its leader). The Puritan asks :-"Why the tippet is commanded, and the stole forbidden."

The legal Use of ornaments is that which is prescribed (see p. 265, and introduction note).

The mere use is not necessarily a lawful use. But Royal and Episcopal authority forbade many things which were in use (see p. 287).

The CARLTON RIDE INVENTORIES do not prove that the ornamenta to which they refer were lawfully used in worship, for they specify many things which were clearly unlawful. At the Reformation, a large quantity of vestments and ecclesiastical utensils were put aside as illegal. In some instances, private cupidity seized upon and sold them, and appropriated the proceeds. The Commissioners, therefore, interfered and assigned the goods to the parochial authorities to prevent misapplication. The lawful sale in its proceeds was devoted to public And yet this assignment is quoted as a proof of the lawful use of such ornaments in worship!
