Clarence E. Macartney (1879-1957) was born in Northwood, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1924. His pastoral ministries included the influential First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, from 1927-1953. Macartney was also a frequent conference, college, and seminary lecturer. He published more than forty books of sermons and Bible expositions as well as works on Abraham Lincoln and other historical subjects. His other works include: He Chose Twelve; Great Women of the Bible; The Greatest Texts of the Bible; Twelve Great Questions About Christ; and Paul, the Man.

J. Gresham Machen (18811937) was professor of New Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He was also the author of Christian Faith in the Modern World, What Is Faith? and The Origin of Pauls Religion.
