THE special object of this work is to help the private worship of those English Church people whose spiritual temperament is rather sober than ecstatic, and who cannot be quite real in the use of the highly-coloured expressions of glowing feeling, or of the antiquated phraseology, which others find delightful and edifying. The materials of a former compilation of devotions for Church-helpers have been incorporated and re-arranged. The matter which related exclusively to Church work will be found under separate headings in pp. 183-205. The thanks of the compiler are again offered to those who have kindly permitted him to make use of forms already published in other books of devotion. He desires to offer his apologies to any authors of copyright who have inadvertently been overlooked in his wish not to infringe their rights, and to make special mention of his obligations to the Rev. W. Walsham How; the Rev. W. E. Scudamore; the Rev. R. M. Ben son; the late Robert Brett, Esq.; the Rev.
