My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. In the multitude of my thoughts within me Thy comforts delight my soul.

Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. Who forgiveth all thy iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, so that thy strength is renewed like the eagle's.

He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad.

This is my rest for ever; here will I dwell, for I have desired it.

ADDITIONAL EUCHARISTIC DEVOTIONS. For use at Home or in Church, as time may allow.

Act of Resolution.

LORD, I resolve henceforward to avoid such sights as . . . such books as such company as · such thoughts as I resolve for Thy sake to practise... O Lord, I dare not do this save in union with this offering now made to Thee, to be accepted, as I trust, with the Oblation of Thy blessed Son; and I humbly beseech Thee that, in eating His Flesh

and drinking His Blood, my heart and my will may be strengthened and sanctified to perform this resolution to Thy honour and glory. Lord, I pray Thee to accept my resolve, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Act of Submission.

JESUS, Lord and Master, be that to me

Thine own good pleasure. Cause my soul to be prepared for Thy coming at whatever hour Thou mayest come. Vouchsafe to me submission, patience, a peaceful conscience, a watchful spirit, and then come as Thou wilt come, O Thou Who art the salvation of all who trust in Thee. And, moreover, I beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus, interpose Thine Agony and Bloody Sweat, Thy Cross and Passion, and Thy most precious Blood-shedding, between Thy judgment and my poor soul, now and always, and especially at the hour of my death. And I most earnestly implore Thee that my death may not come upon me unprepared, and that I may retain faith, hope, and charity, my memory and intellect, even to my latest breath. Even so come, Lord Jesus, and have mercy upon me. Amen.

Act of Faith.

BELIEVE, O Lord Jesus Christ, that in Thee I have been born again to be a child of God; that Thou hast given me Thy life.

I believe that though I have fallen many a time since, yet that Thou hast sought me and recovered me, and made me repent, and hast smiled upon me.

I believe that Thou art able and willing to give me Thyself more abundantly.

I believe that I can do all things through Thee, if Thou wilt strengthen me.

I believe that none ever looked to Thee and were confounded, or called on Thy Name and were forsaken.

I believe that Thou hast called me by name and hast led me out, and that when Thou puttest me forth anywhere, Thou wilt not forsake me.

I believe that Thou wilt be a merciful and faithful High Priest to approach God on my behalf, to make reconciliation for my sins.

I believe that as far as the east is from the west, so far hast Thou removed my transgressions from me; that like as a father pitieth his children, so Thou pitiest me.

I believe that in all my affliction Thou art afflicted.

I believe that Thou wilt not suffer me to be tempted above that I am able to bear.

I believe that Thou wilt strengthen me for my special work, as Thou didst Thy servants in old times, Moses, Gideon, Samson, Elijah, and Jeremiah.

I believe that with Thee all things are possible, even to make me perfect.

I believe that the Holy Ghost is within me, pleading with me, ready to convince me of sin. I believe that Thou art now interceding for

me.

I believe that my whole life, and every event in it, is ordered by Thy most loving providence, to draw me to Thee, to make me flee to Thee, and abide in Thee.

I believe that Thou art most unwilling that I should perish, but art full of compassion and long-suffering towards me, that I may come to repentance, and be forgiven.

I believe that there is joy in heaven over me

as I repent.

Lord, I know that Thou lovest me.

Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief.
Lord, increase my faith.

I will gird myself and serve Thee!

Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do ?

Acts of Hope.

No. I.

LORD, in Thee is my hope.

[ocr errors]

I desire, and pray, and purpose, to live for the future, not for the present.

I desire to look forward in my work to the coming of Thy Kingdom.

I desire to labour here, that I may grow to desire rest more and more.

I desire to look forward to rest for a while in Paradise with Thee, and then to rise again with my body to glorify Thee for ever in heaven.

I desire now to put my treasure in heaven, to send my affections very often, even now, to where Thou art ascended.

I desire to be so settled in the life of hope now, that earthly and transitory things may fail to affect and disturb me.

I hope now to advance in holiness, to forget those things which are behind, and to reach forward to those things which are before.

I believe I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, that I have received the earnest; I look to be filled with all the fulness of God.

I desire to be bold in my hope, to look high in humility, and obedience, and saintliness. I desire to follow Thee very closely.

I brace myself to the cross now, that I may be with Thee in Paradise.

I desire to drink of Thy cup now, that I may be a doorkeeper in Thy House hereafter.

O Lord, I cling to my hope, the hope of seeing Thee as Thou art.

O Lord, I thank Thee for my hope. Confirm it, strengthen it, deepen it, engross it. Lord, purify me, even as Thou art pure! Amen.

No. 2.

(Grounded upon the Articles of the Faith.)

I

KNOW that Thou, O GOD, art ONE. hope that with all Saints I may be one in Thee, as Thou, O Father, art in the Son, and the Son in Thee.

I know that Thou, O FATHER, art ALMIGHTY, able to do things impossible with men. I hope that Thou wilt make me holy. I hope that Thou, Who didst MAKE HEAVEN AND EARTH, ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE, wilt bring to perfection the new heavens and the new earth, wilt make known to us more and more of Thy infinite creation, that we may the more glorify Thee herein.

I know that Thou, O LORD JESUS CHRIST, ONLY-BEGOTTEN of the Father, hath made me partaker of sonship with Thee. I hope that Thou, Who wert before all worlds, GOD, and LIGHT, and VERY GOD, wilt rule, and illumine, and fill my whole being; that the old man may utterly die out of me, and that I may be wholly Thine, and with Thee where Thou art.

I hope that Thou, BY WHOM ALL THINGS WERE MADE, wilt show me Thy glory, for which all creation exists.

I hope that Thou, Who didst COME DOWN
