OF CHARITY, OR LOVE TOWARDS OUR NEIGHBOUR; AND OF GOOD WORKS.
FROM ROM the doctrine of faith we next proceed to that of charity, for faith and charity are conjoined like truth and good, or like light and heat in the time of spring. We use this similitude, because spiritual light, which is the light that proceedeth from the sun of the spiritual world, in its essence is truth, and in consequence, truth in that world, wheresoever it appeareth, shines with a splendor according to its purity; and spiritual heat, which also proceedeth from the same sun, in its essence is good. The case is the same with respect to charity and faith, as with good and truth, charity being the complex of all things belonging to the good which a man doeth to his neighbour, and faith the complex of all things belonging to the truth which he thinketh respecting God and things divine. Since then the truth of faith is spiritual light, and the good of charity spiritual heat, it follows, that there is a similitude between these two and the two properties of the same name in the natural world; that is to say, that as by their conjunction B·
