As stated in the Preface to the Handbook in Part I., this little series is intended for the English and American traveller as a Guide to the great Christian memorials, monumental liturgical monastic and papal, which meet him on all sides in Rome. The fact that a handbook of this description has not yet been written for Christian Rome, has induced this attempt to supply the deficiency. Much light, too, has been thrown by recent discoveries and research upon some of the subjects touched, and the results, with the valuable information hidden away in big volumes, are not ordinarily accessible to the visitor. The material is dealt with descriptively and historically. This Second Part of the series treats of the Church ceremonies, and gives some historical account of their origin and meaning; it is also arranged as an office book for use at the functions. For this purpose the Latin and English texts of the mass appear, the latter being the accepted English translation. A description of these Christian festivals and ceremonies necessarily holds good for the same ceremonies and festivals elsewhere, and we therefore hope that the book will also prove of use out of Rome. |
