NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS.

THOSE Gentlemen who have not yet remitted for 1853 are respectfully requested to do so as speedily as possible. The remaining Volumes for 1853 will be

GIESELER, Vol. IV., and

OLSHAUSEN and EBRARD on the HEBREWS. Attention is earnestly requested to the following PROSPECTUS, and the Publishers will be happy to send a quantity of them to any of their friends who will kindly assist them in making the New Series known.

PROSPECTUS OF A NEW SERIES

OF

CLARK'S FOREIGN THEOLOGICAL LIBRARY.

Ar the close of 1853 THIRTY-TWO VOLUMES of THE FOREIGN THEOLOGICAL LIBRARY will have been published, and the time seems now to have arrived to give a new impetus to the undertaking by commencing a NEW SERIES, and thus giving an opportunity of Subscribing to individuals who might otherwise be deterred by the extent of the present Series.

In thanking their Subscribers for the support with which they have been hitherto favoured, the Publishers would take this opportunity of requesting a continuance of such support, and they would earnestly invite all who are interested in the promotion of Biblical Literature to lend a helping hand by recommendation of the Series and otherwise, so that they may be enabled to carry out their plans with the fullest efficiency.

They may be pardoned for alluding to the difficulties they have had to contend with, both in the publication of the BIBLICAL CABINET and of the FOREIGN THEOLOGICAL LIBRARY, principally arising from the suspicions attaching to German theological publications. From the first, however, it was their resolution to confine their selection to the writings of those who, while able theologians, were, in essential points, sound in the faith. They are happy to record their conviction that, even in a business point of view, to have pursued an opposite course would have been most unprofitable, and they believe that they have now secured such an amount of confidence as will enable them in future to go on with increased spirit.

While the Series is undoubtedly designed for the especial service of the Clergy of all denominations, every intelligent and well-instructed layman will find it a valuable addition to his library; and the more wealthy could not bestow a more

useful or acceptable present upon clergymen of limited means, by a very small annual expenditure.

At the close of this year, the Publishers expect to have completed all the Works which they have begun, with the exception of a posthumous volume of NEANDER'S General Church History, and the fifth volume of GIESELER'S Compendium of Ecclesiastical History, which will bring the work down to the time of the Reformation. Those two volumes will be supplied when ready, independently of the New Series, to Subscribers to the First Series at subscription price.

The New Series will not materially differ from the First in external appearance. Increased attention will be given to accuracy of typography, and a new and beautiful type will be employed.

From the arrangements already made, the volumes of the same work will follow each other as far as practicable. The Subscription will be the same as hitherto, viz., One Pound per Annum for four large Volumes demy 8vo, when remitted before 31st March in each year-after that date 21s. This last condition will be rigidly adhered to.

No Subscriber is bound beyond the current year, but in every case of withdrawal, early notice is expected to be given.

Unless notification is received to the contrary, the books will be forwarded as usual to the present Subscribers.

Intending new Subscribers are requested to intimate their intention as early as possible, either direct or through a respectable bookseller, with explicit directions for forwarding.

The Publishers are happy to announce, that as their First Series commenced with Dr HENGSTENBERG's Commentary on the Psalms, so by special arrangement with the Author, the New Series will begin with a new and greatly improved edition of his great Work—

THE CHRISTOLOGY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, the sole right of publishing a Translation of which, in this country, they have secured. The sheets will be transmitted from Germany as printed, and it is hoped that the first Volume may be ready by the 1st of December. The Works at present in contemplation are the following:

BAUMGARTEN'S APOSTOLIC HISTORY; or the PROGRESS of the DEVELOPMENT of the CHURCH from JERUSALEM to ROME. Translated by the Rev. A. J. W. MORRISON, A.M.

EZEKIEL, and the BOOK of his PROPHECY; An Exposition. By Rev. PATRICK
FAIRBAIRN, Author of " Typology of Scripture," "Jonah," &c. 8vo, 10s. 6d.

"Mr Fairbairn has succeeded in producing a work which was greatly wanted, for which he is entitled to our thanks, and which will give his name no mean place among the Biblical Expositors of his country and language, and, what is of much more importance to him and to us, which has cast considerable light upon one of the obscurest portions of God's word."-Kitto's Journal.

"The author of this work gives evidence in his pages of the possession of abilities and attainments, which fully entitle him to assume the onerous task of a commentator on Ezekiel.”—— English Review.

"In the department of critical exposition, it is long since anything comparable to it has appeared in this country."-Free Church Magazine.

Dr E. W. Hengstenberg.

EGYPT and the BOOKS of MOSES; or, the Books of Moses Illustrated by the

Monuments of Egypt. With an Appendix. By E. W. HENGSTENBERG, D.D., Professor of Theology at Berlin. Translated by R. D. C. ROBBINS, Abbot Resident Professor, Theological Seminary, Andover. With Additional Notes by W. COOK TAYLOR, Esq., LL.D., M.R.A.S. of Trinity College, Dublin. 8vo, 7s. 6d.

"Egypt and the Books of Moses,' is an invaluable addition to the means already possessed in this country, for understanding the references to Egyptian customs so often alluded to in the Pentateuch."-Evangelical Magazine.

HENGSTENBERG, D.D., Professor of Theology in the University of Berlin. Translated by J. E. RYLAND, Editor of the "Life and Correspondence of John Foster." In 2 vols. 8vo, 21s.

"The name of Hengstenberg guarantees the sound scholarship and critical acuteness with which it stands connected. In the departments of Old Testament exegesis, no man in modern times has done so much for orthodox Christianity; his defence of the Pentateuch, and his expositions of other books of the Old Testament, place him at the very head of Biblical scholars."-United Presbyterian Magazine.

DISSERTATIONS on the GENUINENESS of DANIEL, and the INTEGRITY

of ZECHARIAH. By E. W. HENGStenberg, D.D., Professor of Theology in the University of Berlin. Translated by the Rev. B. R. PRATTEN. And a Dissertation on the History and Prophecies of Balaam by the same Author. Translated by J. E. RYLAND. 8vo, 12s.

"A master in theological learning and thought."-Archdeacon Hare.

"The production of a profoundly learned man, of vast powers of mind-his delineation of the Christian life possesses the rare merit of being more practicable and full, more minute and extensive, more clear, accurate, and fresh, than is almost ever heard in the most popular enforcement of the subject from the pulpits of this country."-Free Church Magazine.

WORKS PUBLISHED BY T. AND T. CLARK,

M. Victor Cousin.

COURSE of the HISTORY of MODERN PHILOSOPHY. By M. VICTOR COUSIN. Translated by O. W. WIGHT. In 2 Vols., post 8vo, price 88. 6d., cloth, (Free by Post.) "M. Cousin's 'Course of the History of Modern Philosophy' is here, for the first time entire, presented to the English reader. It consists of Lectures delivered at Paris in the years 1828-9. The delivery of these Lectures,' says Sir Wm. Hamilton, 'excited an unexampled sensation in Paris. Condemned to silence during the reign of Jesuit ascendancy, M. Cousin, after eight years of honourable retirement, had ascended again the chair of philosophy; and the splendour with which he recommenced his academical career, more than justified the expectation which his recent reputation as a writer, and the memory of his earlier lectures, had inspired. Two thousand auditors listened in admiration to the eloquent exposition of doctrines unintelligible to the many, and the oral discussion of philosophy awakened in Paris, and in France, an interest unexampled since the days of Abelard. The daily journals found it necessary to gratify, by their earlier analyses, the impatient curiosity of the public; and the Lectures themselves, taken in short hand, and corrected by the Professor, propagated weekly the influence of his instruction to the remotest provinces of the kingdom.” ”— Edinburgh Review.

Dr W. T. Hamilton.

THE PENTATEUCH and its ASSAILANTS; or, a Refutation of the Objec tions of Modern Scepticism to the Pentateuch. By W. T. HAMILTON, D.D. In demy 8vo, price 7s. 6d., cloth, (Free by Post.)

I. The Character of Moses as a Scholar and Statesman.-II. Necessity of Revelation.-III. The Bible as a Revelation from God.-IV. Authenticity and Genuineness of the Pentateuch as the Work of Moses.-V. Genesis the Work of Moses and Inspired.-VI. Creation in Six Days. VII. Population of the Earth in the Days of Cain, and Longevity of the Patriarchs. VIII. The Giants.-IX. The Deluge Universal.-X. Death among the Creatures of God, its Origin, Extent, and Consequences.-XI. Man One Family.-XII. Indebtedness of Modern Literature to the Bible.

"All these subjects are treated with much learning, scientific as well as Biblical, and calmly and dispassionately discussed."-Literary World.

"A book that is unanswerable, affording the strongest confirmation to the many and varied evidencies that the Bible is essentially the Word of God.”—Bell's Weekly Messenger.

Dr Augustus Neander.

THE EPISTLE of PAUL to the PHILIPPIANS, and the GENERAL EPISTLE of JAMES, PRACTICALLY and HISTORICALLY EXPLAINED. By Dr AUGUSTUS NEANDER. To which is added, A Discourse on the Coming of our Lord, and its Signs, by the same Author. Translated by the Rev. ALEXANDER NAPIER, M.A., Vicar of Holkham, Norfolk, post 8vo, 3s., cloth.

"In this age, when few writers do more than repeat, especially in Scripture interpretation, what others have said long before, it is pleasant to meet with one who, out of the rich fulness of his mind, can present us with something fresh, ingenious, and which, even when not new, has all the aspect of newness from the mode in which it is presented, and from the circumstances by which it is surrounded."-Kitto's Journal.

Dr F. Schleiermacher.

BRIEF OUTLINE of the STUDY of THEOLOGY, drawn up to serve as the

Basis of Introductory Lectures. By the late Dr FREDERICK SCHLEIERMACHER. To which are prefixed, Reminiscences of Schleiermacher. By Dr FREDERICK LUCKE. Translated by WILLIAM FARRER, LL.D., post 8vo, 4s., cloth.

"The work of a gigantic mind. It is incomparably the most suggestive work we ever read— every sentence is a mine of thought."-Kitto's Journal.

"The work before us partakes very much of the mental character of Schleiermacher, clear, methodical, and epigrammatic. He thinks and writes with mathematical precision, and indeed may be said to have reduced theology to a science. These outlines might be called the Euclid of theology. Every article forms a distinct proposition-accompanied with explanatory notes, which may be termed the corollaries, and the publication of the work in English cannot fail to have a beneficial effect on the theological studies of our country. Its utterly unsectarian and orthodox character adapts it to all denominations, and they could not do greater honour to themselves than by adopting it as a text book. We thank him for making this timely and valuable addition to our theological literature. The work is a gem, and that too of the first water."- M'Phail's Journal.

By far the most complete and most practical treatise hitherto written on the subject."Literary Gazette.

"One or two rapid readings will not suffice to exhaust the treasures of Christian and pastoral experience, of enlightenment, of tenderness, of practical directions, of elevation, and of edification, which fill these pages. We will find it to our profit to read at least once a year this precious volume, if it were only as the means of serving us pastors for the examination of our consciences." -Archives du Christianisme.

Highly instructive, and written in a practical and religious spirit."-English Review.

VITAL CHRISTIANITY: Essays and Discourses on the Religions of Man and the Religion of God. By ALEXANDER VINET, D.D., Professor of Theology in Lausanne, Switzerland. Translated, with an Introduction, by ROBERT TURNBULL, Pastor of the Howard Street Church, Boston. Post 8vo, 2s., cloth.

"We recommend this valuable tract, as well calculated to induce men to watch and pray, to study and labour to defend truth and refute error, to lead them to cherish an humble spirit, and to expose pretension."--Christian News.

Rev. George Lewis.

THE BIBLE, the MISSAL, and the BREVIARY; or, Ritualism Self-Illustrated in the Liturgical Books of Rome: containing the Text of the entire Roman Missal, Rubrics, and Prefaces, translated from the Latin; with Preliminary Dissertations, and Notes from the Breviary, Pontifical, &c. By Rev. GEORGE LEWIS, Ormiston. In 2 Vols., 8vo, price 21s., cloth. "These volumes are written with a moderation and candour—with an eye upon the good as well as the evil that has sprung up in the track of Romanism-that may well conciliate for their subject the attention of those who are repulsed by works of one-sided dogmatism. They supply a void in the popular literature of this question, and fill a place that has not hitherto been occupied in a controversy so prolific of authorship. The entire work we regard as one of the most valuable modern additions to the Romanist controversy, and it will, we doubt not, speedily find its place in the library of every student of that subject."-Edinburgh Courant.

Dr Gardiner Spring.

THE MERCY SEAT: Thoughts Suggested by the Lord's Prayer. By GARDINER SPRING, D.D., Pastor of Brick Presbyterian Church, in the City of New York. Post 8vo, 2s., cloth.

It is necessary to mention that Messrs CLARKS' is the only Edition both elegantly printed and bound, published in this country, and in ordering it, it is requested that it may be particularized.

"Dr Spring is no stranger on this side of the Atlantic; he already enjoys among us an established and well-earned reputation. This is a truly admirable book; there are fresh and delightful views opened up, the product of a vigorous mind, in which the word of God richly dwells. The language is so chaste as to please the most fastidious, while the tone and sentiments are such as to commend it to all God-praying people."-Free Church Magazine.
