macy, which concerneth the king's authority in causes ecclesiastical, with "loathsome and base flattery, abominable and blasphemous adulation, shameful heresy and untruth against nature" (these be the powers of cardinal Allen's rhetoric) bewray themselves to be somewhat near of kin unto those false teachers, that speak great swelling words of vanity: whose characters St. Peterd and St. Jude have long since deciphered; that not only, out of their presumption and self conceitedness, "they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities," but also after a brutish manner take the boldness to "speak evil of those things which they understand not," from whose seductions I beseech God to deliver all his Majesty's true hearted subjects.

QUANTUM ad fidem rerum conferat epistolarum propriis temporibus scriptarum diligens inspectio; cum ex aliorum annalium, tum ex historiæ Augustæ scriptorum lectione, compertum habent eruditi. Hinc ego patriarum antiquitatum, ecclesiasticarum præsertim, penitius cognoscendarum studio ductus; ut Sedulii nostri epistolas (quas intra centum quadraginta proximos annos adhuc extitisse, ex Johanne Trithemio intellexeram) alicunde nanciscerer, operam inprimis dedi.
