SEQUEL

TO THE

MEMOIRS OF THE MARGRAVINE OF BAREITII.

THE SEQUEL promised by the French Editor of these Memoirs, has never appeared, possibly owing to the interference of the royal family of Prussia, which could not be flattered by the tenor of the present publication, however unconscious the writer appears to be of degrading it. Of great importance to herself, this princess seems to have been of so little to other people, that after a considerable search, nothing can be discovered on record in relation to her subsequent life which merits particularising. Her death occurred in the midst of the Seven Years' War, and Thiebault relates that her brother Frederick the Great, who received the news in his camp, studied a volume of the funeral orations of Bourdaloue in order to

compose a sermon on her death. However imperfect as a Life, the Autobiography of the MARGRAVINE of BAREITH will always be valuable as a spontaneous unpremeditated description of prevalent character and manners in the major and minor courts of Germany, during the early part of the last century; and of the existence of scenes and actors, a proper conception of which nothing short of a pen in some of their own hands could have adequately conveyed.

LITERAL AND FREE TRANSLATIONS. Now ready, in 8vo.

A SERIES of DOUBLE TRANSLATIONS from the Languages generally taught in this country, ON THE PLAN RECOMMENDED BY THE EDINBURGH REVIEW AS AN IMPORTANT IMPROVEMENT UPON MR HAMILTON'S METHOD.

"In all former Hamiltonian books one important thing was wanting to give the literal translation its full advantage; if the words of the original are translated with the strictest fidelity and closeness, word for word, the translation is unintelligible; in order therefore to make the sense apparent, sacrifices have been made, which have essentially destroyed the virtue of the system. In these new works this has been remedied by adding a third and free translation. The suggestions were originally made in the Edinburgh Review. Thus the necessity of a master is wholly obviated. Any person of ordinary industry and intelligence, from the 'Cato Major' alone, in the course of six weeks or two months, would acquire a knowledge of Latin, which three or four years of ordinary school education rarely succeeds in giving.”—Atlas.
