Constantine the Great, wishing to put an end to the profanation practised by the idolaters, in the Holy Land, undertook a journey to Jerusalem, in 326. His mother, St. Helena, who accompanied him, caused the temple of Venus, built on mount Calvary, to be thrown down. Whilst making some deep excavations, three crosses of the same size were discovered; but puzzled to know upon which our Saviour had suffered, a woman, who had been ill from a long time and who was at the last extremity, was touched by each. The sudden cure of this individual appeared a certain proof, and St. Helena eagerly divided the treasure she bad discovered: one half remained at Jerusalem, and the other was sent to Constantinople. The empress Helena is by the side of the bed, on one knee; her husband with their child is at the foot of the bed: on the right is St. Macarius, the patriarch of Jerusalem, all return thanks to heaven for the miracle which has just taken place. Paelinck having spent three years at Rome, did his picture of the Invention of the Cross about 1810. It now is placed in the church of St. Michael at Ghent, in one of the aisles. Constantin le Grand, voulant faire cesser la profanation que les idolâtres avaient établie dans les lieux saints, fit, en 326, le voyage de Jérusalem; sainte Hélène sa mère, se trouvant avec lui, fit abattre le temple de Vénus que l'on avait élevé sur le Calvaire. En faisant des fouilles profondes, on découvrit trois croix de même grandeur; mais, embarrassé pour reconnaître celle sur laquelle le Sauveur avait été attaché, on imagina de toucher, avec chacune d'elles, une femme malade depuis long-temps et qui se trouvait à toute extrémité. La guérison subite de cette femme parut une preuve certaine, et sainte Hélène s'empressa de partager le trésor qu'elle venait de découvrir. Une moitié resta à Jérusalem, l'autre moitié fut envoyée à Constantinople. Le peintre Joseph Paelinck a placé sainte Hélène un genou en terre, et rendant grâce au ciel du miracle qui vient de s'opérer. Au pied du lit, est le mari de la malade, avec son enfant; à droite, saint Macaire, patriarche de Jérusalem, qui avait suggéré à sainte Hélène le moyen de reconnaître la croix de Jésus-Christ. M. Paelinck ayant passé trois années à Rome, vers 1810, c'est alors qu'il fit son tableau de l'invention de la SainteCroix : il est placé maintenant dans l'église de Saint-Michel, å Gand, dans un des bras de la croix.
