THE ILLNESS OF ANTIOCHUS.

Seleucus, one of Alexander's generals, founded the kingdom of Syria, about 300 years B. C. and was called Nicanor (Victorious). He had married Stratonice, who was remarkably beautiful, and who made a deep impression on the heart of Antiochus Soter, son to the King. The young prince wished to repress his love; but, so far from succeeding, he fell into a state of languor which endangered his life. The physician Erasistrates, guessing the cause of the disorder, informed the King of it, and the Monarch consented to give up his wife to his son.

The painter Gerard Lairesse has represented the moment when the old King, accompanied by his youthful bride, announces to his son that, wishing to give him life a second time, he gave up his rights, and granted him as a wife ber whom he loved so passionately.

This picture may be considered as one of Lairesse's finest, The composition is well disposed and the handling finished, the expressions are nicely given. The countenance of Seleucus is full of kindness, that of Stratonice is full of modesty, and that of Antiochus perfectly expresses gratitude. The physician Erasistrates displays the thoughtfulness of a philosopher. This picture which is painted on wood has been engraved by Niquet.

MALADIE D'ANTIOCHUS.

Seleucus, l'un des généraux d'Alexandre, fonda le royaume de Syrie environ trois cents ans avant J.-C., et reçut le nom de Nicanor (le Victorieux). Il avait épousé Stratonice, dont la beauté était remarquable, et qui fit une vive impression sur le cœur d'Antiochus Soter, fils du roi. Ce jeune prince voulut réprimer son amour; mais, loin d'y parvenir, il tomba dans un état de langueur qui mit sa vie en danger. Le médecin Érasistrate, ayant devine la cause du mal, en informa le roi : le monarque consentit à céder son épouse à son fils.

Le peintre Gérard Lairesse a représenté le moment où le vieux monarque, accompagné de la jeune reine, annonce à son fils que, voulant qu'il lui doive une seconde fois la vie, il lui abandonne ses droits, et lui donne pour épouse celle qu'il aime si passionnément.

On peut considérer ce tableau comme un des plus beaux de Lairesse. La composition est bien disposée et l'exécution précieuse; les expressions sont bien senties. La figure de Séleucus est pleine de bonté, celle de Stratonice est remplie de modestie, et celle d'Antiochus exprime parfaitement la reconnaissance. Le médecin Érasistrate montre la réflexion d'un philosophe.
