4 And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables.

5 But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. Be sober.

6 For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand.

7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

8 As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming. Make haste to come to me quickly.

BT. PAUL having preached the faith in the island of Crete, he ordained his de. loved disciple and companion TITUS bishop, and left him there to finish the work which he had begun. Afterwards the Apostle, on a journey to Nicopolis a city of Macedonia, wrote this Epistle to Titus; in which he directs him to ordain bishops and priests for the different cities, sewing him the principal qualities necessary for a bishop, also gives him particular advice for his own conduct to his flock, exhorting him to hold to strictness of discipline, but seasoned with lenity. It was written about thirty-three years after our Lord's Ascension.

2 Unto the hope of life everlasting, which God, who lieth not, hath promised before the times of the world:

3 But hath in due times manifested his word in preaching, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our Saviour:

CHAP. III. Ver. 11. By his own

Other offenders are judged, sentence of the pastors of the same and cast out of the church, by the

church. Heretics, more unhappy, run out of the church of their own accord: and, by so doing, give judgment and sentence against their own sculs.



PHILEMON, a noble citizen of Colossa, had a servant named ONESIMUS, whe robbed him, and fled to Rome, where he met ST. PAUL, who was then a prisoner Where the first time. The Apostle took compassion on him, and received him with tenderness and converted him to the faith; for he was a Gentile before. ST. PAUL sends him back to his master with this Epistle in his favour; and though he beseeches PHILEMON to pardon him, yet the Apostle writes with becoming dignity and authority. It contains divers profitable instructions, and points out the charity and humanity that masters should have for their ser. vants.


He commends the faith and charity of Philemon and sends back to him his fugitive servant, whom he converted in prison.

10 I beseech thee for my sor whom I have begotten in my bands, Onesimus,

11 Who hath been heretofore unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable both to me and thee,

12 Whom I have sent back to thee. And do thou receive him as my own bowels;

13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered to me in the bands of the gospel:

14 But without thy counsel I would do nothing: that thy good deed might not be as it were of necessity but voluntary.

15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season from thee, that thou mightest receive him again for ever;
