Professor of Logic and Metaphysics in the University of Edinburgh

THIRD EDITION, REVISED

Oxford

AT THE CLARENDON PRESS

1884

NOTE TO SECOND EDITION.

In this Edition the Introduction to the Selections has been rewritten, and the relevant parts of the Supplementary Note merged in it; the three Prefatory Notes have been revised; a number of foot-notes have been added, and the others amended or withdrawn. The volume has been kept nearly within its original dimensions by the subtraction of portions of the text, in the Vindication and in Siris, that seemed unnecessary. It is hoped that these changes may make the work less unworthy of the indulgent reception it has already met with in this country and in America.

October, 1878.

NOTE TO THIRD EDITION.

THE demand for a third Edition of the Selections has afforded an opportunity for amending the expression of the thought contained in the General Introduction and in the Annotations. It is hoped that the book is now, thus and otherwise, better fitted for its intended office, as an aid to reflection on the fundamental questions raised in Berkeley's short and easy method with Materialists, or new metaphysical conception of the Universe.

November, 1883.
