created, and was created pure, was, if they polluted themselves, not that they fhould make themselves, in ftatu quo, pure; but that the Aleim, on their Part, fhould first Typically, and afterwards Really, wafh off thofe Pollutions; and Men, on their Part, fhould endeavour to avoid further Pollutions: And when so, or further polluted, they, while the Types lafted, fhould apply to the Perfon appointed, or Pricft, and apply the Types to be typically cleanfed and refer the Completion to the Aleim, to their Perfon, who fhould wash and cleanse them really. David, who had the Types, prays for this, Pfal. li. 2, Wash me thoroughly from mine Iniquity, and cleanfe me from my Sin. ver. 7, Wash me, and I shall be whiter than Snow. The first Offenders attempted to hide the Cause of their Pollution: The apoftate Jews would have the Types to be fufficient to cleanse them; and the Gentiles thought the Names, these Agents, fufficient to cleanse them: But none, till lately, were ever fo mad as to think that they could cleanse themselves. What the Covenant was, what the Promife prior to the Types was, and what the Oath of Confirmation, before or af ter the Promise was perform'd typically, express'd first in the Word Aleim, already explain'd and afterwards by fundry Declarations in words at large, was; and what was, will appear by the Things Actions, and Effects in the Types, and in the Completion of them by the Perfon typified; because the Covenant and Promise, and Oath was, to give really what was firft, for a long Time, reprefented typically, and at last perform'd really. The typical Thing or Things was, or were, one or more of the clean Creatures which were appointed for Sacrifice, and bore the Name of Berith, the Purifier; and the Act is exprefs'd by the Word cutting off the Life, flaying the Creature, or Creatures; typically the Berith, the Purifier And fo by na and ♫, dividing one or more of them in two Parts, to fhew the Intereft each Party had in him; and by y paffing between the Parts, to fhew their Confent, Gen. xv. 9, And he faid unto him, Take me an Heifer of three Tears old, and a She-Goat of three Tears old, and a Ram of three Tears old, and a Turtle Dove, and a young Pigeon. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midft, and laid each Piece one against another; but the Birds divided he not. Ver. 17. Behold a Smoak fmoaking Furnace, and a burning Lamp, that y paffed between thofe Pieces. In that fame Day Jehovah with Abram , cut off the Purifier (the Emblem of the Purifier.) Jer. xxxiv. 18. I will give the Men that have tranfgreffed my Berith, which have not perform'd the Words of the Berith which they cut off before me, the Calf, which they cut in twain, and paffed between the Parts thereof, &c. Whether their Name of Hebrew came from fome former Exhibition of this new Act with Abram, may be confider'd. Circumcifion was made a Sign of this Action, and the fame Word n as is us'd for cutting of the Berith, is us'd Exod. iv. 25, for cutting off the Foreskin: And if any Male were not circumcis'd, he was, Gen. xvii. 14, by the fame Word, to be cut off, flain. The real and typical Acts by Mofes, as Vice-Aleim, or Steward, Exod. xxiv. 4, was writing the Decalogue, or &c. and building an Altar, Ver. 5, by the Hands of young Men, flaying, fhedding the Blood, and burning a Holocauft, and a M. "To cut the Throat, behead, kill a Sheep or other Animal which is eat upon account of Sacrifice" facrificing Sacrifices of Peaces to Jehovah of young Bulls: And Ver. 6, by his own Hands fprinkling half of their Blood upon the Altar. Ver. 7, Read ing the Decalogue, or c. which he call'd the Book of the Berith, to the People; and hearing or receiving their Confent. Ver. 8, Sprinkling the other Half of the Blood upon the People, and faying, Behold the Blood of Berith (the Blood of the Bulls, the Type of the Perfon; and the Blood, the Type of the Blood of Berith, the Purifier) which Jehovah n cutteth off (flayeth) with you upon -53. כל הדברים האלה Sacrifice was a continued Reiteration of this Act, and many of the SALT, which purifies the choice Metals in the Fire, and preferves Flefh, &c. from Corruption, Offenfiveness, &c. gives a Relish to it in Food, and perhaps, inwardly, contributes to cleanse our Bodies; was to be added to the Emblem of this. Berith, when facrificed, Levit. ii. 13, And every Oblation of thy Meat-Offering fhalt thou feafon with Salt: Neither halt thou Suffer the Salt of the Berith of thy Aleim to be lacking from thy Meat-Offering. With all thine Offerings thou shalt offer Salt. Numb. xviii. 19, It is a Berith of Salt for ever. Ezek. xliii. 24, And. the Priests fhall caft falt upon them, and they fall offer them up for a burnt Offer ing unto Jehovah. Mark. ix. 49, And every Sacrifice fhall be falted with Salt. As Words fubftituted for Things spoken or written, are the Reprefentatives of the Things, fo of Actions, Emblems and Perfons: If the Words of the Covenant, on the Part of Jehovah, were in Substance, that he would appoint Perfons or Priests, to initiate, and who, at certain Times, and upon certain Occafions, by Washings, Purifications, Luftrations, fweet Savours, flaying Sacrifices, offering them, sprinkling with Blood, &c. fhould purify the People typically, call'd Numb. xxv. 13, The Berith of an everlasting Priesthood, Neh. xiii. 29, The Berith of the Priesthood; and at the End of thefe Types fhould fend and cut off the real Purifiers and on the Behalf of the People initiated, that they fhould have no other Aleim, and perform the typical Rites and Precepts: And as exhibiting these typically, was performing the Covenant; fo the Writing which Mofes call'd the Book of the Berith, or as they are call'd Exod. xxxiv. 28, The Words of the Berith, the ten Commandments.
