ON THE COMPLETION OF HIS SEVENTY-FOURTH VOLUME

N golden times, contending Poets vied

1. 10 ning the flero of their Country's birth.

But, in thefe days of party-praife and pride,

Who raife their voice in praife of modeft worth?

Yet to Parnaffian height his name fhall go,

And place him in the conftellation there with Swift;
For, know, he ranks with those that did bestow

On Britain's Crown her choiceft, noblest gift.
Mine be it, then, though with a junior Mufe
Of humbler vein, this labour to effay :
For candid Fame to Truth fhall ne'er refufe
Another record to a NEW-Year's Day.

• The grateful Sons of Letters yet anborr

Thee, URBAN, for thy genius fhall adore;
Whofe defultory ftudies thall adorn

Their Country's name, and fwell the rifing fore
Whether, like BOYLE OF NEWTON, they fhall trace
Myfterious Nature to her secret source,

Range the ftarr'd Poles, or through unbounded pace
O'ertake the burning Comet's rapid course;

Or whether they, more fav'rites yet of Heav'n,
Like SHARSPEARE or like MILTON feek to vie,
To Poefy's foft phrenzy often given,

Twine round their brows the bays that never die.
Here fhall the Poet frame the votive lay,

1

To URBAN's praise in ages yet to come;
"Yes," fhall fome raptur'd Bard be heard to say,
"'T was URBAN's labours rear'd the fwelling tome."
Hence, long as Time fhall hold his waining glass,
. Within thy Repertory their works fhall fhine,
And Sons of Science, yearly as they país,

Their choiceft gifts together fhall entwine,

Blefs'd be their names who feek the Public Good,"
Deny'd by none who know their Country's right.
Inftruction is a blefling, like a flood,

Sweeps all before it in a flood of light.

Urge boldly on, by fair renown be led,

Juft as of old in claffic days when try'd,
Proud as Scamander, when Jove's offspring faid,
Rife, Ilion, rife!" and Ilion rear'd her head.
