Chrift preacbeth, &c. CHAP. 33 Peter anfwered, and faid unto him, Though all men fhall be offended becaufe of thee, yet will I never be offended. 34 Jefus faid unto him, Verily. I fay unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 35 Peter faid unto him, Though I fhould die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewife allo faid all the difciples. 36¶ Then cometh Jefus with them unto a place called Gethfemane, and faith unto the difciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37 And he took with him Peter and the two fons of Zebødce, and began to be forrowful, and very heavy. 38 Then faith he unto them, My foul is exceeding forrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, faying, O my Father, if it be poffible, let this cup pafs from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. 40 And he cometh unto the difciples, and findeth them alleep, and Taith unto Peter, What! could ye not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the fpirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42 He went away again the fecond time, and prayed, faying, O my Father, if this cup may not pafs away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 43 And he came and found them afleep again for their eyes were heavy. 44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the thire time, faying the fame words. XXVI. he is betrayed 45 Then cometh he to his difciples, and faith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your reft: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of finners. 46 Rife, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. 47 And while he yet fpake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with fwords and ftaves from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now, he that betrayed him gave them a fign, faying, Whomfoever I fhall kifs, that fame is hes hold him faft. 49 And forthwith he came to Jefus, and faid, Hail, Master; and kiffed him. so And Jefus faid unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come Then came they and laid hands on Jefus, and took him. them 51 And behold, one which were with Jefus ftretched out s hand, and drew his fword, and ftruck a fervant of the high prieft's and fmote off his ear. 52 Then faid Jefus unto him, Pat up again thy fword into his place; for all they that take the word fhall perish with the fword. 53 Thinkeft thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he fhall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then fhall the fcrips tures be fulfilled, that thus it ma be? 35 In that fame hour faid Jefus to the multitudes, Are ye come out, as againft a thief, with fwords and ftaves for to take me? I fat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. 56 Batall this was done, that the fcriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the difciples forfook him, and fled. 57 1 And and denied of Peter. 70 But he denied before them all, faying, I know not what thou fayeft. Chrift falfely accufed, S. MATTHEW. 57 And they that had laid hold on Jefus led him away to Caiaphas the high prieft, where the scribes and the elders were affembled. 58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high prieft's palace, and went in, and fat with the fer vants to fee the end. 59 Now, the chief priests and elders, and all the council, fought falfe witnefs against Jefus, to put him to death; 60 But found none: yea, though many falfe witneffescame, yet found they none. At the laft came two falfe witneffes, 61 And faid, This fellow faid, Iam able to deftroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 62 And the high prieft arofe, and faid unto him, Anfwereft thou nothing? What is it which these witnefs against thee? 63 But Jefus held his peace. And the high priest antwered and faid unto him, I adjurethee by the living God, that thou tellus whether thou be the Chrift, the Son of God. 64 Jefus faith unto him, Thou hat laid: nevertheless, I fay unto you, Hereafter fhall ye fee the Son of man fitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high prieft rent his clothes,faying, He hath fpoken blafphemy; what further need have we of witneffes? behold, now ye have heard his blafphemy. 66 What think ye? They anfwered and faid, He is guilty of death. 67 Then did they fpit in his face, and buffeted him; and others fmote bim with the palms of their hands, 68 Saying, Prophefy unto us, thou Chrift; Who is he that fmote thee? 69 Now Peter fat without in the palace: and a damfel came unto him, faying, Thou also wast with Jefus of Galilee, 71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid faw him, and faid unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jefus of Nazareth. 72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. 73 And after a while came unto him they that ftood by, and faid to Peter, Surely thou alfo art one of them; for thy fpeech bewrayeth thee. 74 Then began he to curfe and to fwear, faying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. 75 And Peter remembered the words of jefus, which faid unto him, Before the cock crow thou fhalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. CHAP. XXVII. Chrift delivered to Pilate. W HEN the morning wascome, all the chief prieftsand elders of the people took counfel againft Jefus to put him to death. 2. And when they had bound him they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. 31 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he faw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of filver to the chief priefts and elders, 4 Saying, I have finned, in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they faid, What is that to us? fee thou to that. 5 And he caft down the pieces of filver in the teinple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 And the chief priests took the filver pieces, and faid, It is not lawful for to put them into the treafury, because it is the price of blood. 7 And they took counfel, and bought with them the potters field, to bury frangers in. 8 Wherefore Pilate admonifbed. XXVII. Barabbas releafed. 22 Pilate faith unto them, What fhall I do then with Jefus, which is called Chrift? They all fay unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why? what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, faying, Let him be crucified. CHAP. 8 Wherefore that field was called the field of blood, unto this day. Barabbas, or Jefus, which is called Chrift? 18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. 19 When he was fet down on the judgment-feat his wife fent unto him, laying, Have thou nothing to do with that juft man: for I have fuffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20 But the chief priefts and elders perfuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and deAtroy Jefus. 21 The governor aniwered, and faid unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They faid, Barabbas. 27 Then the foldiers of the governor took Jefus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of foldiers. 28 And they stripped him, and put on him a fcarlet robe. a 29 ¶ And when they had platted crown of thorns they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, fay ing, Hail, king of the Jews! 30 And they fpit upon him, and took the reed, and fmote him on the head. 31 And after that they had mocked him they took the robe off from him and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. 32 And, as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his crofs. 33 T And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to fay, A place of a fcull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and, when be Chrift crucified, reviled, S. MATTHEW. giveth up the gboft, &c. he had tafted thereof, he would it with vinegar, and put it on a not drink. 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, cafting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was fpoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vefture did they caft lots. 36 And fitting down, they watched him there; 37 And fet up over his head his accufation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him; one on the right band, and another on the left. 39 And they that paffed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40And faying, Thou that defroy eft the temple, and buildeft it in three days, fave thyfelf. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewife alfo the chief priefts, mocking him, with the fcribes and elders, faid, 42 He faved others, himself he cannot fave. If he be the King of Ifrael let him now come down from the crofs, and we will believe him. 43 He trufted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: 'for he faid, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves alfo, which were crucified with him, caft the fame in his teeth. 43 Now, from the fixth hour, there was darknofs over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jefus cried with a loud voice, faying, EN, Eli, lama fabachthani? that is to fay, My God, my God, why haft thou forfaken me? 47 Some of them that flood there, when they heard that, faid, This man callet, for Elias. 48 And ftraightway one of them ran, and took a fpunge, and filled reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The reft faid, Let be; let us fee whether Elias will come to fave him. 50 Jefus when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghoft. 51 And, behold, the vail of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent, 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the faints which flept arofe, 53 And came out ofthe graves after his refurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. 54 Now, when the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jefus, faw the earthquake, and thofe things that were done, they feared greatly, faying, Truly this was the Son of God. 55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jefus from Galilee, miniftering unto him: 56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Jofes, and the mather of Zebedees children.· 574 When the even was come, there came a rich mạn of Arimathea, named Jofeph, who alo himfelf was Jefus's difciple: 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jefus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59 And when Jofeph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great ftone to the door of the fepulchre, and departed. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, fitting over against the fepulchre. 631 Now, Cbrif appeareth to the CHAP. IN CHA P. XXVIII. Chrift's refurrection declared. N the end of the fabbath, as it began to dawn toward the firft day of the week, came Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, to fee the fepulchre. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake; for the angel of the Lord defcended from heaven, and came and rolled back the ftone from the door, and fat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as fnow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did thake, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answered, and faid unto the women, Fear not ye; for I know that ye feek Jefus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here; for he is rifen, 28 h faid. Come, fee t'he place where the Lord lay: 7 And go quickly And tell his difciples that he is ren from the dead; and behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; the fhall ye fee him: lo, I have told you. And as they went to tell his difciples, behold Jefus met them, faying, All hail, And they came and held him by the feet, and worfhipped him. tell my 10 Then faid Jefus unto them, Be not afraid: go brethren that they go into Galilee, and there fhall they fee me. 11 Now,whenthey were going, behold, fome of the watch came into the city, and fhewed unto the chiefpriefts all the things that were done. 12 And when they were affembled with the elders, and had taken counfel, they gave large money unto the foldiers, 13 Saying, Say ye, His difciples came by night and ftole him away while we flept. 14 And ifthis come to the governor's ears, we will perfuade him, and fecure you. 15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this faying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. 16 Then the eleven difciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jefus had ap pointed them. 17 And when they faw him they worthipped him:but fome doubted. 18¶And Jefus came and pake unto them, faying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and ofthe Son, and of the Holy Ghoft; 20 Teaching them to obferve all things whatfoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
