The fig-tree curfed., their peace: but they cried the more, faying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou fon of David. 32 And Jefus ftood ftill and called them, and faid, What will y that I fhall do unto you? ye 33 They fay unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. 34 So Jefus had compaffion on them, and touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes received fight, and they followed him. CHAP. XXI. A 2 Saying unto them; Go into the village over against you, and ftraightway ye fhall find an afs tied, and a colt with her loofe them, and bring them unto me. 3 And if any man fay ought unto you, ye fhall fay, The Lord hath need of them; and Atraightway he will fend them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was fpoken by the prophet, faying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and fitting upon an afs, and a colt, the foal of an afs. 6 And the difciples went, and did as Jefus commanded them, 7 And brought the afs, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they fet him thereon. 8 And a very great multitude fpread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, faying, Hofanna to the fon of David: Bieffed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hofanna in the higheft. Io And when he was come into Jerufalem all the city was moved, faying, Who is this? II And the multitude faid, This is Jefus the prophet, of Nazareth of Galilee. 12 T And Jefus went into the temple of God, and caft out all. them that fold and bought in thé temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the feats of them that fold doves, 13 And faid unto them, It is written, My houfe fhall be called the house of ye have prayer; 14 Ana the blind and the fame came to him in the temple; and he healed them. 151 And when the chief priefts and feribes faw the wonderful things that he did, and the chil dren crying in the temple, and faying, Hofanna to the fon of David; they were fore difpleased, 16 And faid unto him, Heareft thou what thefe fay? And Jefus faith unto them, Yea: have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and fucklings thou haft perfected praife? 17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there. 18 Now, in the morning, as he returned into the city he hungered. 19 And when he faw a fig-tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon but leaves only, and faid unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And prefently the fig-tree withered away. 20 And when the difciples faw it they marvelled, faying, How foon is the fig-tree withered away! 21 Jefus anfwered, and faid unto them, Verily I fay unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the B4 fig-tree, Chrift rebuketh the S. MATTHEW. priefs and elders, &C fig-tree, but alfo if ye fhall fay unto believed him not; but the publithis mountain, Be thou removed, cans and the harlots believed him: and be thou caft into the fea; it and ye, when ye had feen it, repentfhall be done. ed not afterward, that ye might believe him. 22 And all things whatsoever ye fhall afk in prayer, believing, ye hall receive. 23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priefts and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and faid, By what authority doeft thou thefe things? and who gave thee this authority? 24 And Jefus anfwered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell me, I in like wife will tell yon by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptifm of John, whenee was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, faying, If we thall fay, From heaven; he will fay unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? 26 But if we fhall fay, Of men; we fear the people: for all hold John as a prophet. 27 And they answered Jefus, and faid, We cannot tell. And he faid unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. 28 But what think ye? A certain man had two fons; and he came to the first, and faid, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard. 29 He answered and faid, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went. 33Hearanother parable; There was a certain householder which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a wineprefs in it, and built a tower, and let it out to hufbandmen, and went into a far country: 34 And when the time ofthe fruit drew near, he sent his fer.ants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits of it. 35 And the husbandmen took his fervants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again, he fent other fervants more than the firft: and they did unto them likewife. 37 But laft of all he fent unto them his fon, saying, they will reverence my fon. 38 But when the husbandmen faw the fon, they faid among themfelves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us feize on his inheritance. 39 And they caught him, and caft him out of the vineyard, and slew him. 40 When the lord, therefore, of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto thofe hufbandmen? 41 They fay unto him, He will miferably deftroy thofe wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which fhall render him the fruits in their feafons, 30 And he came to the fecond, and faid likewife. And he anfwered, and faid, I go, fir; and went not, 31 Whether of them twain did 42 Jefus faith unto them, Did ye the will of his father? XXII. and faid, 2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his fon, 3 And fent forth his fervants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: andthey would not come. 4 Again he fent forth other fervants, faying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I dinner; my or have prepared my and my fatlings and all things are ready: marriage. 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandife: 6 And the remnant took his ferand intreated them fpitefuland flew them. come unto the i But when the king heard thereof he was wroth: and he fent forth his armies, and destroyed thofe murderers, and burnt up their city. 8Thenfaith he to his fervants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. And he was fpeechleis. 13 Then faid the king to the fervants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and caft him into outer darkness; there fhall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chofen. 15 Then went the Pharifees, and took counfel how they might entangle him in bis talk. 16 And they fent out unto him their difciples with the Herodians, faying, Mafter, we know that thou art true, and teacheft the way of God in truth, neither careft thou for any man; for thou regardeft not the perfon of men. 17 Tell us, therefore, what thinkeft thou? Is it lawful to give tri bute unto Cefar, or not? 18 But Jefus perceived their wickednefs, and faid, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? 19 Shew me the tribute-money. And theybrought unto himapenny. 20 And hefaith unto them, Whole is this image and fuperfcription? 21 They fay unto him, Cefar's. Then faith he unto them, Render, therefore, unto Cefar the things which are Cefar's; and unto God the things that are God's 22 When they had heard thefe words they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. 23 The fame day came to him the Sadducees, which fay that there is no refurrection, and afked him, 24 Saying, Mafter, Mofes faid If a man die, having no children The Sadducees confuted. MATTHEW. 25 Now, there were with us feven brethren; and the firft, wken he had married a wife, deceased; and having no iffue, left his wife unto his brother: 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the feventh. 27 And laft of all the woman died alfo. 28 Therefore, in the refurrection, whofe wife fhall the be of hefeven? for they all had her. 29 Jefus answered and faid unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the fcriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For in the refurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels of God in heaven. 31 But, as touching the refurree tion of the dead, have ye not read that which was fpoken unto you by God, faying, 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. 33 And whenthemultitude heard this they were aftonished at his doctrine. 34 But when the Pharifees had heard that he had put the Sauducees to filence they were gathered together. 35 Then one of them, which quas a lawyer, alked him a queftion, tempting him, and faying, 36 Mafter, which is the great Commandment in the law? Of the Meffias,&c. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 41 While the Pharifees were ga thered together, Jefus asked them, 42 Saying, What think ye of Chrift? whofe fon is he? They fay unto him, The fon of David. 43 He faith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, faying, 44 The LORD faid unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footftool? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his fon? 46 And no man was able to anfwer him a word; neither durft any man, from that day forth, afk him any more questions. CHAP. XXIII. THE pake Jefus to the multitude, and to his disciples, 2 Saying, The fcribes and the Pharifees fit in Mofes' feat: 3 All, therefore, whatfoever they bid yon obferve, that obferve and do; but do not ye after their works: for they fay, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's fhoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be feen of men: they make broad their phylacieries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief feats in the fynagogues, 37 Jefus faid unto him, Thou7 And greetings in the markets, shalt love the Lord thy God with and to be called of men, Rabbi, all thy heart, and with all thy foul, and with all thy mand. Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: 38 This is the firft and great for one is your Mafter, even Chrift; and all ye are brethren. commandment. 39 And the fecond is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyfelf 9. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Lo Neither Woes denounced against CHA P. XXIII. hypocrily and blindness. 10 Neither be ye called Maters: for one is your Mafter, even Chrift 11 But he that is greateft among you fhall be your servant. 12 And whofoever fhall exalt himfelf thall be abafed, and he that thall humble himself fhall be exalted. 13 But woe unto you, fcribes and Pharifees, hypocrites! for ye fhut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourfelves, neither fuffer ye them that are entering to go in. 14 Woe unto you, fcribes and Pharifees,hypocrites! for ye devour widows houfes, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore yefhall receive the greater damnation. of mint, and anife, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier manters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: thefe ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Te blind guides! which ftrain at a gnat, and fwallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, fcribes and Pharifees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outfide of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excefs. 26 Thou blind Pharifee' cleanfe firft that which is within the cup and platter, that the outfide of them may be clean alfo. 27 Woe unto you, fcribes-and Pharifees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited fepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 15 Woe unto you, fcribes and Pharifees, hypocrites! for ye compafs fea and land to make one profelyte; and when he is made, ye make him two-fold more the child 28 Even fo ye alfo outwardly apof hell than yourselves. pearrighteou untomeh,but within yeare full of hypocrify andiniquity. 29 Woeunto you,fcribes and Pharifees, hypocrites! becaufe ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnifh the fepulchres ofthe righteous 16 Woeunto you,yeblind guides! which fay, Whofoever fhall fwear by the temple, it is nothing; but whofoever fhall fwear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor. 17 Te fools, and blind! for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that fanctifieth the gold? 18 And, Whofoever fhall fwear by the altar, it is nothing; but whofoever fweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. 19 Ye fools, and blind! fo whe ther is greater the gift, or the altar that fanctifieth the gift? 20 Whofo, therefore, fhall fwear by the altar, fweareth by it, and by all thing thereon. 21 And whofo fhall fwear by the temple, fweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that fhall fwear by heaven, fweareth by the throne of God, and by him that fitteth thereon. 23 Woeunto you, fcribes and Pharifess, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe 30 And fay, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 31 Whereforeye be witneffes unto yourfelves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Te ferpents, ye generation of vipers! how can ye efcape the damnation of heil? 84 Wherefore, behold, I fend unto you prophets, and wife men, and ferites; and fome of them ye fhall kill and crucify; and fome of them fhall ye fcouge in your fy nagogues, and perfecute them from city to city; 35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood fhed upon the earth |
