H. & C. TREACHER, AND G. WAKELING, PREFACE. THESE Sermons are published in compliance with one of the latest wishes expressed by the Author. They were preached before the University of Cambridge in 1850, 1853, and 1854, with the exception of the seventh Sermon, which forms a sequel to the sixth, and is added according to the Author's own intention. Those who were deputed to prepare these Sermons for the press, are deeply sensible that the Author himself would have subjected them to the most careful revision, and that his own finishing touches would have imparted a grace and a completeness, which must now remain wanting. These Sermons, as well as others, would have been long ago published by himself, had he not been overwhelmed with his daily work, and scrupulously slow to satisfy himself with his own compositions. |
