INTRODUCTION.

THE peculiar circumstances under which the Diocesan Statutes of the Province of Leinster fell into the hands of the Editor, render it necessary to prefix a brief account of them to this Edition and to the translations and notes which accompany it.

Having seen the book in a catalogue for the sale of the library of the Rev. Patrick Walsh, (the Roman Catholic priest who had been appointed by Dr. Troy to revise and correct the notes of the Rhemish Testament) the Editor being then about to leave Dublin, requested a bookseller to attend the sale and purchase this with some other books for him; the bookseller having inquired to what price he should go for the books, some of them he was desired to purchase, if they were sold at a cheap rate, and a few of them he was desired to purchase at whatever price they cost; the Editor not supposing they would be bought in at any extraordinary price: among these latter was the Diocesan Statutes. The account of the circumstances attending the sale of this book is given in the following letter from the bookseller to the Editor.
