97. Queft. Are no Images or Resfem. Deut. blances to be made at all then? Anf. God neither fhould, nor can be reprefented by any Means. But as for the Creatures, although it be lawful to exprefs them, yet notwithstanding God forbiddeth their Images to be made or kept, fo as thereby to worship or honor either them, or God by them.

99. Queft. What doth God decree in the third Command?

100. Queft. Is it then fuch an beinous Sin to take the Name of God in vain by Swearing or Imprecations, that God is alfo angry with them who do not 1 Lev. 5. forbid or prevent it as much as they can?

Anf. Surely it is a moft a heinous Sin. For neither is there any Sin greater, or more offenfive to God, than the Contempt of his facred Na• Lev. 24. me. Wherefore alfo He would have this Crime to be punished with Death.

Anf. No. For a lawful Oath is an Invocation of God, whereby we defire, that He, as the only Searcher of Hearts, bear witnefs unto the Truth, and punish the Swearer, if he knowingly afwear falfly. But this Honor 92 Cor. 1. r is due to no Creature.

And further alfo, that by our Patience we should bear with b their Vices and Manners, ever reflecting upon this, that it is the Will of God to lead and govern us by their Hand.

the Root and Caufe of Mnrder, to wit, h Anger, i Envy, Hatred k and Defire of Revenge, and doth 1 account them all for Murder.

107. Queft. But is it enough that we kill no Man in the Manner mention'd above?

Anf. It is not enough. For when God condemneth Anger, Envy, and Hatred, He requireth that we should love m our Neighbour as ourselves, and that we fhould ufe Humanity, Lenity, Courtefy, Patience, and p Mercy towards Him: end q fhould divert whatever might be hurtful to him, to the utmoft of our Power. In a Word, that we fhould be fo difpofed in our Minds, as to make no Scruple to do good, even to our Enemies.

109. Queft. Doth God forbid nothing elfe in this Command, but Adultery, and fuch Kinds of Uncleanness?

Anf. Since both our Body and Soul are the Temples of the Holy Ghoft, God will have us to poffefs both in Purity and Holiness. And therefore

He wholly forbiddeth all Deeds, Geftures, y Speches Thoughts, z filchy Lufts, and wharfoever a enticeth a Man unto these.

110. Queft. What doth God forbid in the eight Command?

Anf. Not only thofe b Thefts, and c Robberies, which the Magiftrate punitheth: but under the Name of Theft He comprehendeth whatfoever evil Crafts, and Tricks, whereby we seek after other Mens Goods, and endeavour by Force, or with fome fhew of Right, to d convey them over unto ourselves: of which Sort are falfe Weights, falfe Elas, unequal f Measures, deceitful Merchandise, counterfeit Coin, g Ufury, or any other Way or Means of furthering our Eftate, which God hath forbidden. 113. Queft. What doth the tenth Command for bid?

Anf. That our Hearts frould not at any Time be drawn afide by the leaft Defire, or Thought, from any Command of God: but that continually and from our Heart we deteft all Sin, and on the contrary, deligh in all Righteoufness.

114. Queft. But can they who are converted unto God, perfectly keep these Commands?

Anf. Not at all. But even the holieft Men as long as they live have only fmall Beginnings of this v Obedience: yet fo, that they begin with an Rom. 7. earneft and unfeigned Defire and Endeavour, to live, not according to fome only, bot according to all the Commands of God.

115. Queft. Why will God then bave bis Law to be fo exactly and feverely preached, fince there is no Man in this Life, who is able to keep it?

Anf. First, that all our Life-Time we may more and more a acknowledge the great Propenfity of our Nature to Sin; b and fo much the more earnestly pray for the Remiffion of Sins and Righteoufnefs in Chrift. Moreover, that we, perpetually doing the laft, and reflecting upon the first, 24. Phil. S. fhould alfo implore from the Father, 12.13, 14. the Grace of his holy Spirit, by which we may, Day by Day, be more and more renewed after the Image of God, until at length, after we are departed out of this Life, we may joyfully attain unto that Perfection, which is proposed unto us.

120. Queft. Why doth Chrift teach us to addrefs God thus, OUR FATHER?

Anf. That immediatly in the very Beginning of Prayer He might excite in us fuch a Reverence for, and Confidence in God as becomes the Sons of God, which ought to be the Ground and Foundation of our Prayer: to wit, that God is, become our Father through Chrift, and will much lefs deny unto us thofe things, which we ask of Him with a true Faith, than our Parents will deny unto us earthly good things.

121.Queft. Why is it added, WHICH ART IN HEAVEN?

Anf. Left we fhould conceive any. thing low or earthly concerning the heavenly Majefty of God: and alfo that we m fhould expect from his Almighty Power, whatever things are neceffary for Soul and Body.

Anf. HALLOWED BE THY NAME. That is, grant us firft to known Thee aright, and to worship, praife and magnify thy Almighti nefs, Wisdom, Goodness, Juftice, Mercy, and Truth, fhining forth in all thy Works. And further alfo that we may always, order our whole Life, Thoughts, Words, and Works to this End, that thy moft holy Name may not be reproached upon our Account, but rather be renowned with Honor and Praifes.
