Instead whereof, (until the said discipline may be restored again, which is much to be wished) it is thought good, that at this time (in the presence of you all) should be rehearsed the Ten Commandments, and that, after every Commandment, ye shall ask God mercy for your transgression thereof for the time past, and grace to keep the same for the time to come.

Minister.

OD spake these words, and said; I am the Lord, thy God Thou shalt have none other gods but me.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in

:

them that love me, and keep my commandments.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his name in vain.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath-day. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long in the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt do no murder.

[blocks in formation]

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Minister. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is his.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. ¶ Then shall be made a Sermon to the people, in which it shall be explained what manner of sins are forbidden by each of these Commandments, to the intent that each one examining his conscience by the light of God's law, may be moved to earnest and true repentance, and may walk more warily in these dangerous days.

T The Sermon ended, they shall all kneel upon their knees, and the Priest and Clerks kneeling

(in the place where they are accustomed to say the Litany) shall say this Psalm,

PSALM li. Miserere mei, Deus.

HAVE, mercy upon me, O

God, after thy great goodness according to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offences.

Wash me throughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me.

Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged.

Behold, 1 was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me.

But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.

Thou shat purge me with thou shalt wash me, and I shall hyssop, and I shall be clean: be whiter than snow.

Thou shalt make me hear

of joy and gladness: that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Turn thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds.

God: and renew a right spirit Make me a clean heart, O within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence: and take not thy holy Spirit from me.

[blocks in formation]

Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord and my mouth shall shew thy praise.

:

For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee: but thou delightest not in burntofferings.

The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise.

O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteous ness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

Answer. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.
