5 Here, when our fpirit faints and dies, And confcience fmarts with inward ftings; The Sun of righteousness fhall rife, With healing beams beneath his wings. 6 Here would our ravish'd souls abide; Or if from hence we must depart, Let neither life nor death divide

Our God and Saviour from our heart,

Hymn XXVII.

WATTS, altered.

Long Mctre.

The Word made Flefb.

[*]

BEFORE the heavens were spread abroad,

From everlafting was the Word;

With God he was, the Word was God,
And by th' angelic host ador'd.

2 By his great power were all things made,
By him fupported, all things ftand;
He is the whole creation's Head,
And angels fly at his command.
3 Ere fin was born, or Satan fell,
He led the hoft of morning ftars!
Thy generation who can tell?
Or count the number of thy years?
4 But lo, he leaves thefe heavenly forms,
The Word defcends and dwells in clay;
That he may converfe hold with worms,
Drefs'd in fuch feeble flefh as they.

5 Mortals with joy behold his face,
Th' eternal Father's only Son;
How full of truth, how full of grace!
When through his eyes the Godhead fhone.
6 Arch-angels leave their high abode,
To learn new myfteries here, and tell
The love of our defcending God,
The glories of Emanuel.

Hymn XXVIII. Common Metre. [*]

Faith in the Promife of Salvation.

BEGIN, my tongue, fome heavenly theme,

And fpeak fome lofty thing;

The mighty works, or mighty name,
Of our eternal King.

2 Tell of his wond'rous faithfulness,
Or found his power abroad;
Sing the bleft promife of his grace,
And the performing God.

3 Proclaim falvation from the Lord,
To finful, dying men;

His hand has writ the facred word,
With an unerring pen.

4 Engrav'd as in eternal brafs,
The gracious promise shines;
Nor fhall the hand of time erase
Those everlasting lines.

5 Then why thefe doubts and fad complaints?
If Christ and we are one,
The word extends to all the faints,
Who humbly love the Son.

By faith in this our fouls have liv'd,
And part of heaven poffefs'd;

We'll praise him then for grace receiv'd,
And trust him for the reft.

Hymn XXIX.

WATTS.

Particular Metre. [X]

The Refurrection and Glory of Chrift.
EHOLD! the bright morning appears,
And Jefus revives from the grave!

His rifing removes all our fears,
And proves him Almighty to fave.

How ftrong were his tears and his cries!
The worth of his blood how divine!
How perfect his great facrifice,

Who rofe though he fuffer'd for fin!
2 The man who was crowned with thorns,
The man who on Calvary died,
The man who bore fcourging and fcorn,
Whom finners agreed to deride;
Now bleffed forever is made,

And life has rewarded his pain;
Now glory has crowned his head :
This is the true Lamb that was flain!

3 Believing we fhare in his joy,

By faith we partake of his reft;
With him we can cheerfully die,
For with him we hope to be bleft.
'Tis Jefus, the firft and the last,
Whofe Spirit fhall guide us fafe home;
We'll praise him for all that is paft,
And trust him for all that's to come!

Dymn XXX.

Common Metre.

Praife to the Lamb of God.

EHOLD the glories of the Lamb,

Amidst the Father's throne !
Prepare new honours for his name,
And fongs before unknown.

2 Let Elders worship at his feet,
The Church adore around;
With vials full of odours fweet,
With harps of fweeter found.

3 Thofe are the offer'd prayers of faints,
And these the hymns they raise;
Jefus is kind to our complaints,
He loves to hear our praise.

HART.

[ocr errors]

4 Now to the Lamb that once was flain,
Be endlef's bleffings paid;
Salvation, glory, joy remain
Forever on thy head.

5 Thou haft redeem'd our fouls with blood,
Haft fet the pris'ners free;
Haft made us kings and priests to God,
And we shall reign with thee.

6 The worlds of nature and of grace
Are put beneath thy power;
Then fhorten these delaying days,
And bring the promis'd hour.

Hymn XXXI.

WATTS.

Short Metre. [*]

The Nativity of Chrif.

EHOLD the grace appears!

B The promife is fulfil'd;

"Mary, the wond'rous virgin, bears,
And Jefus is the child.

2 To bring the glorious news,
A heavenly form appears;
He tells the thepherds of their joys,
And banishes their fears.

3 "Go, humble fwains, faid he,
To David's city fly;

The promis'd Infant born to day
Doth in a manger lie.

4 With looks and hearts ferene,
Go vifit Chrift your King."
And ftrait a flaming choir was seen ;
The fhepherds heard them fing.
5 "Glory to God on high !

And heavenly peace on earth!
Good will to men, to angels joy,
At the Redeemer's birth P

6 In worship fo divine,

Let faints employ their tongues ;
With the celeftial hoft we join,
And loud repeat their fongs.
7 "Glory to God on high!
And heavenly peace on earth!
Good will to men, to angels joy,
At our Redeemer's birth."

Hymn XXXII. Common Metre. [b]

B

The Ignorance of Man.

EHOLD the new born infant griev'd,
With hunger, thirst and pain!

It cries to have its wants reliev'd,
But knows not to complain.

2 Such childhood yet I must confefs,
Though long in years mature;
Unknowing whence I feel diftrefs,
And where to feek its cure.
Author of good! to thee I turn;
Thy ever watchful eye
Alone, can all my wants difcern,
Thy hand alone fupply.

3

4 O let thy fear within me dwell,
Thy love my footsteps guide;
That love thall vainer loves expel,
That fear, all fears befide.

5 And fince, by error's force fubdu'd,
'My oft mifguided will

Prepoft'rous fhuns the latent good,
And grafps the specious ill;

6 Not to my wifh, but to my want,
Do thou thy gifts apply ;-

Unafk'd, what good thou knoweft, grant,
What ill, though afk'd, deny.
