NOAH lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. He was the last who reached so great His son Shem lived after the flood five hundred years, and lived to see a great multitude of descendants. But Noah's grandson Arphaxed lived only to the age of four hundred and thirtyeight years, and his son four hundred and thirtythree. His grandson, Eber, indeed, attained the age of four hundred and sixty-four. But from that time the strength of men diminished so rapidly, that no one of those who came after ever reached two hun

dred and fifty years. Shem outlived his descendants in the tenth generation. At that time mighty men began to bring the people under their dominion. The first tyrant was Nimrod, the grandson of Ham and great grandson of Noah; and the beginning of his kingdom was Babel.

At that time all the world spoke one language. They determined to found a city in the plain of Shinar, near the river Euphrates, and to build in it a tower, the top of which should reach to heaven; to make themselves a name, and to prevent their being scattered abroad upon the face of the earth. But their plan did not please God. "And the Lord said, Let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth and they left off to build the city." If they had gone on and prospered in building that city and tower, it might have kept the world of wicked men, the

enemies of God's people, together, as was their design, They might have remained united in one vast powerful body, in opposition to the church of

God. Thus it was in kindness to his church in the world, and in prosecution of his great design of redemption, that God put a stop to the building of the city and tower of Babel.

A SHORT time before the death of Noah, Abram was born, in the tenth generation from Shem. Men were then divided into many nations, and were sunk into idolatry. Then the Lord said to Abram, "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee,

But there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle, about the pasture; for both of them had a great many cattle; and the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together. And Abram said unto Lot, "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? Separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou a Gen. xii. 1-3.
