French cinema is second only to Hollywood in the number of its movie stars who have emerged to achieve international fame. France is, in fact, arguably the only country other than the United States to have an international "star system." Ginette Vincendeau is Professor of Film Studies at King's College London. She is the editor of the BFI/Cassell Encyclopedia of European Cinema, and the author of The Companion to French Cinema (BFI/Cassell 1996) and Pépé le Moko (BFI, 1998).
