Przednia okładka
Wydawn. Nauk. PWN, 1998 - 339
Presents the situation of Polish Jews living in Germany, and the events which led to the expulsion in October 1938. Ca. 11,000 Jews returned to Poland in 1937 without money or prospects of employment. Poland, desiring to stem this tide, cancelled the citizenship of Poles who had not visited Poland for five years. The Nazis reacted by expelling ca. 17,000 Polish Jews. Describes the expulsion actions in several German towns. Relates how the Polish consul in Leipzig, Feliks Chiczewski, allowed 1,000 Jews to take asylum in the consulate and thereby saved them from expulsion. Describes conditions in Zbąszyń, where more than 6,000 Jews were interned for months, and the aid offered by Jewish organizations and committees, among them Emanuel Ringelblum and his co-workers. Relates reactions in the press, and negotiations between Poland and Germany concerning the expelled Jews. In January 1939 an agreement allowed some of the Jews to return to Germany temporarily. In spring 1939 there were still ca. 4,000 Jews in Zbąszyń. With the outbreak of war in September, there was no longer any interest in the fate of the Jews there.
